Feb. 9, 2007
For the Bisons on Friday, February 8, it was an uphill battle from the start. The Evansville Purple Aces posted a five run first, but one run was all they would need as they handed the Bisons a 10-0 loss.
Left-hander Paul Piennette received the season-opening start for the Bisons, but never made it out of the fourth inning. In 3.2 innings, he gave up seven runs on six hits while striking out two.
However, the Bisons had their backs against the wall from the first pitch, Evansville's Ben Norton threw. A lead-off walk to Ben Williams is all Norton would give up over six innings. He struck out eight to record his first win of the season.
Jeremy Kuester relieved Norton to start the seventh, and allowed a hit to Casey Bond, the Bisons' first of the day.
Second basemen Andew Nickerson recorded the Bisons only other hit on an infield single to third in the ninth.
Right-hander Charles Williams came on in relief of Piennette in the fourth. After walking Kasey Wahl to load the bases, Williams got Pat Tumilty to fly out to deep center to escape further damage.
In 4.1 innings, Williams gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Freshman right-hander Taylor Merry pitched the final inning for the Bisons. In his collegiate debut, Merry gave up just one hit, while striking out two.
However the story of the day was undeniably Evansville' pitching. Together, the two Purple Ace pitchers combined to face the minimum twenty seven batters while striking out ten.
"Norton was definitely impressive today," Lipscomb pitcher Matt Schnelly said. "Our guys never gave up though. We just have to come back out tomorrow and give it our best again, and hope we walk away with the win."
Piennette receive the loss to bring his record to 0-1.
The Bisons will kick off game two of the three game set at one p.m. tomorrow. Left-hander Rex Brothers is scheduled to take the mound for the Bisons. For Evanville, right-hander Fred Jones will receive the start.
