For the second game in a row, the Purple Aces wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three first inning runs, on their way to a 4-2 win.
The Bisons' freshman left-hander, Rex Brothers, looked sharp from the start, but a one out error opened the door for Evansville to add to their 1-0 lead.
After going hitless through the first six innings of Friday's game, Casey Bond singled in his first at bat to record the Bisons' first hit of the game.
The Purple Aces added to their 3-0 lead with another run in the second.
Brothers concluded his first collegiate outing with a scoreless third, before being pulled in favor of right-hander Brandon McClurg. In three innings, Brothers gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits. He struck out one.
McClurg recorded the Bisons first one, two, three, inning in the fourth, after striking out the first two batters.
In the bottom of the inning, Lipscomb scored their first run of the game and of the season on an RBI double by freshman designated hitter, Ryan Wilkins. The hit was the first of Wilkins' collegiate career.
The Bisons added another run in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by freshman Donnie Amos to bring the Bisons to within two.
The highlight of the game for the Bisons' was no doubt McClurg's pitching performance. After relieving Brothers to start the fourth, he held Evansville off the board for the remainder of the game. In six innings, McClurg gave up just three hits and a walk, while striking out six.
"Brandon gave the team a huge lift," Bisons' pitcher Matt Schnelly said. "He came in with us already trailing by four and was able to stop the bleeding right there. We were never out of the ballgame. We may not have got the win, but the effort was definitely a stride in the right direction. Overall our pitching was solid, we got some timely hits, and we fell just a little short. We have to come out tomorrow, stay focused, and get our season onto the winning track."
The series will conclude with a final game tomorrow, February 10. Right-hander Matt Schnelly is scheduled to make the 1 p.m. start. Wade Kapteyn will receive the start for Evansville.
