For the first time in 32 years, the Bisons will match up against the number one ranked team in the country, when they face Vanderbilt on Wednesday, February 21.
The last time a Lipscomb baseball team played a number one ranked team it was against the University of South Alabama during the NAIA era on April 12, 1975.
On that day, the Bisons upset South Alabama with a double-header sweep of the Jaguars. Bisons' pitcher, Bo McLaughlin, the winner of game one, returned to the mound in game two, to pitch four innings of relief.
McLaughlin was later drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round of the 1975 draft. He was the fourteenth overall pick, and the only Bisons player ever to play in the Majors. His career also featured stints with the Atlanta Braves and Oakland Athletics.
After the games (which Lipscomb won by scores of 10-5 and 7-6), the Bisons head coach Ken Dugan said, "These certainly were big victories for us. In fact this may have been some our biggest wins ever."
Now, the Bisons will try to replicate the accomplishment against Vanderbilt.
"It is a turning point game in Lipscomb baseball," assistant coach Brian Ryman said. "A win could change the program forever. Our guys believe we can win. We just have to play our game, minimize mistakes, and who knows what will happen."
Senior right-hander John King will receive the start for Lipscomb. King, a transfer from Birmingham Southern, did not give up an earned run in his last start against Auburn.
"I am really pumped up about tomorrows game," King said. "We are just going to go in there, do our best, and play our game. Obviously they are a great team, but we are confident that we can go out there and compete with anybody we face.
"On a personal level, I am definitely excited about the opportunity to start against the number one team in the country. But you have to keep things in perspective and remember that every game is equally important and every win counts the same."
The game which will take place at Hawkins Field on the Vanderbilt campus is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
