DELAND, Fla. _ The Lipscomb Bisons made history by playing in their first ever Atlantic Sun Tournament game.
But they missed a chance at becoming the first No. 6-seed since 2005 to beat the No. 1-seed as thehy fell 4-3 Wednesday night to Stetson at Melching Field at Conrad Stadium.
The game featured a pitching duel between Lipscomb's Rex Brothers, the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, and Stetson's Corey Kluber, the A-Sun Pitcher of the Year.
Brothers left in the eighth inning with a 3-1 lead and two runners on base with no one out. Brandon McClurg entered the game and gave up a single to center by Braedyn Pruitt to load the bases. Jordan scored on a throwing error by Cadavid. Stetson scored the tying and go-ahead runs on a double to left by Adam Tindle.
Brothers allowed four hits and three runs, one earned. He struck out two and walked five. McCLurg took the loss, evening his recordd at 4-4.
Kluber pitched eight innings and gave up eight hits and three runs, all earned. He struck out 12 and walked tbree.
The Bisons left Ben Williams in scoring position at third base in the first inning. Williams led off the game with a single on the first pitch. He then stole both second base and third base, but was left stranded.
Stetson came back in the bottom of the first with a run. Lead-off hitter Shane Jordan singled to right center. Casey Frawley followed with a single up the middle to bring in Jordan.
In the fifth Andrew Nickerson walked. Cadavid struck out swinging. Allen Bolden grounded out to first base to move Nickerson to second. Williams connected for his second hit of the night with a single to center field to score Nickerson.
In the eight Caleb Joseph hit his first-ever Atlantic Sun Tournament home run, his eighth of the season. The solo shot just cleared the wall in left field after traveling approximately 340 feet.
Williams led the Bisons with two hits. He also had a game-high three stolen bases on four attempts.
The Bisons, 28-29, play Gardner-Webb, 25-31, the No.5 seed, Thursday morning at 10 a.m. CDT. Gardner-Webb lost 5-4 to No.2-seed Mercer.
