Tuesday, April 13, 2010The Lipscomb Bisons jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Tennessee Vols, but it was a short-lived advantage.
The Vols put six runs on the board in the bottom of the second, including a three-run home run to right center by Cody Stubbs and did not trail the rest of the way in a 16-7 win over the Bisons Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville.
The Bisons are 12-22 overall. Tennessee is 17-17.
Tennessee would add one in the fourth, five in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth.
The Bisons scored one more in the fourth, two in the seven and one in the eighth.
Cory Hale hit a home in the first inning, his ninth of the season.
Kyle Henry led off the fourth with a home run for the Bisons.
Tyler Wilson and Brett Teschner led the Bisons with two hits each. Tyler Wilson also drove in two runs in the second inning with a double to right field. He also stole his 25th base of the season.
Senior right-hander Matt Bowling started for the Bisons. He gave up seven hits and six runs, four earned, in two innings. He did not walk or strike out a batter as he lost the game, giving him an 0-4 record.
The Bisons used five more pitchers in the game. Only left-hander Alex Ross, who pitched one inning, did not give up a run. Lipscomb pitchers gave up 20 hits. They struck out eight batters.
Right-hander Josh Cotham pitched one inning, lefty Chris Nunn pitched one-third of an inning, right-hander Mike Grace was on the mound for 1.2 innings and left-hander Blake Fonfara closed out the game with two innings of work.
The Bisons are back home this weekend for their biggest Atlantic Sun challenge of the season when Florida Gulf Coast visits Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium. Friday at 6 p.m. Lipscomb’s Josh Smith will face FGCU left-hander Chris Sale, the top player last season in the Cape Cod League.
Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. Sunday’s game starts at noon.
The Bisons are 4-5 in the conference. Florida Gulf Coast is in first place in the conference with a 21-10 record, 12-3 in the A-Sun.
