The Lipscomb Bisons dropped a 7-4 decision at UT Martin Wednesday night at Skyhawk Field in Martin, Tenn. It was the seventh loss for the Bisons in their last eight outings.
UT Martin scored first putting two runs on the board in the first inning as Jordan Owen drove in two Skyhawks with a single to left field.
The Skyhawks posted three more runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. After issuing two walks, Bisons starter Dannie Strable was lifted for Mike Grace. He gave up a hit to right field to score the first run of the inning. Grace then allowed a walk to load the bases. After a wild pitch that scored another run, he issued another walk. UT Martin scored its third run of the inning off a sacrifice fly.
Lipscomb posted its first runs in the fourth frame as catcher Bennett Smith drove in two on a single up the middle.
The Bisons made it a one-run game in the fifth inning after Richie Goodenow brought in a run on a sacrifice fly and Josh Chism singled through the right side to make the score 5-4.
Lipscomb almost evened the contest in the seventh as Goodenow ripped a double to left-center field barely missing a home run by about two feet.
UT Martin added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Strable (2-6) received the loss for the Bisons while Alex Boshers (1-0) earned the win with five innings of three-hit ball for UT Martin.
Alex Ross and Connor Sinclair pitched a combined four innings of relief for the Bisons giving up five hits and no walks while striking out five.
M.L. Williams and T.J. Hoelzer went five-of-ten with two runs scored in the one and two holes for the Bisons.
UT Martin improved to 10-22 while the Bisons fall to 12-22 on the year.
Lipscomb hosts USC Upstate at Dugan Field this weekend in a three-game Atlantic Sun series. First pitch for Friday’s game is 3 p.m. It’s “Grandparent’s Day” with free admission for grandparents bringing their grandchildren to the game. Saturday’s doubleheader will start at noon.
