The Mercer Bears nailed three home runs as they defeated the Lipscomb Bisons 10-2 Thursday evening at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga.
Mercer opened the game scoring a run in both the first and second innings.
Lipscomb posted its first run in the third as Richie Goodenow doubled to right-center to bring home M.L. Williams who had opened the inning with a double to left-center.
The Bears expanded its lead to 6-1 with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth frames. In the eight Mercer platted four runs on four hits taking a 10-1 lead.
Williams scored both of Lipscomb’s runs. In the ninth he reached on an infield single to second base. Then T.J. Hoelzer drove him in with a single to left field.
Bisons starter Blake Fonfara (2-2) scattered eight hits and gave up six runs, all earned. Alex Ross pitched two innings of relief giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits.
Brandon Love (5-1) earned the win for the Bears pitching seven innings giving up one run on five hits.
Mercer improved to 26-15, 10-11 in the Atlantic Sun. Lipscomb fell to 14-25, 5-11 in conference play.
The Bisons and Bears face off in game two Friday evening at 6 p.m. central time. Game three is Saturday at 1 p.m.
