NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team took time out of preparing for exams this week for a pair of service projects in the “Music City”. The Bisons hosted their annual Christmas party for Front Porch Ministry on Monday night and made a visit to the Longview Mansion on Thursday morning for a community service project.
Prior to Monday night’s Christmas Party at the Shamblin Theater on Lipscomb’s campus, the team took a number of kids from the Front Porch Ministry and took them Christmas shopping for their mothers. The players donated the gifts for the kids and then helped them wrap the presents before they were presented later in the evening during the party.
“This is the second year we’ve done a Christmas party for those kids,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “I think we’re able to help some families out at Christmas time. The opportunity our guys get to work with some of those kids that are less fortunate than they are is great. I love watching our kids bond with those young ones in anything and it’s not about just what we can do for them but what they do for us too.”
Thursday’s event saw the team make the short trip off campus to the Longview Mansion on Caldwell Lane. The team was scheduled to clear some brush near the front of the property but the recent rain forced that project to be postponed. Instead, the team fanned out all across Oak Hill and dropped off flyers promoting Longview’s open house on Saturday night.
“Anytime we have the opportunity to help somebody out is something we’ve been talking about all year long,” said Forehand. “We want to think of others before ourselves. This project turned into something that was probably more beneficial to us than it was for the people that we helped. Any time when our team can come together off the field to help somebody else is always important.”
The Bisons open the 2012 season Feb. 17 against St. Louis University at Dugan Field. For season ticket information call (615) 966-5456.
