DELAND, Fla. – The Lipscomb baseball team got a trio of runs in the top of the first inning on Thursday night before a textbook Florida thunderstorm rolled into DeLand but that would be all the offense needed as the Bisons took a 3-2 win over No. 2 seed Florida Gulf Coast in an elimination game of the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship on Friday.
Lipscomb (25-33) got things rolling right out of the gate on Thursday night as senior right fielder Lee Wilson drew a walk to start the contest. The veteran then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Taylor Stewart and took third on a passed ball. That set the table for junior designated hitter Drew Adams, who sent a fly ball to right that brought Wilson home just ahead of the throw to the plate.
Senior shortstop Aaron Sandoval kept the inning going after being beaned just above the rib cage before sophomore first baseman Tyson Ashcraft turned on a pitch and hit it off the base of the foul pole in left field for a two-run blast his fifth of the season.
The Eagles (37-20) would mount a rally of their own in the second inning loading the bases with no outs when the thunderstorm would set in and force the game to be suspended until Friday morning.
When play resumed under clear skies early Friday morning, Lipscomb sophomore righty J Hwang returned to the mound to face a precarious bases-loaded, no out situation. FGCU used a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-2 but that would be all of the offense on the afternoon for the Eagles as Hwang collected his third win of the season.
Making just his second career start, Hwang would toss 7.2 innings of work allowing five hits , four walks and an earned run while striking out five Eagles. Senior reliever Tyler Burstrom was called on in the eighth inning to douse a two-out, bases-loaded situation and got the job done with a strikeout before sending FGCU down in order in the ninth to clinch the win and pick up his fourth save of the season.
Burstrom also ran his scoreless innings streak to 10.2 innings without allowing a run.
The Bisons will see early action again on Saturday morning taking on either North Florida or Kennesaw State at 9 a.m. at Melching Field.
