NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior designated hitter Chad Shannon drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning on Saturday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium to give the Lipscomb baseball team a 4-3 comeback win against Connecticut.
“Last night we went extra innings and couldn’t get it done,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “I just think our team is coming. It’s unfortunate what happened last night but we come back today and get a big win. I’m proud of how we played today.”
The Bisons (3-8) got a good start to the tenth with junior shortstop Grant Massey laced a leadoff double off the base of the centerfield fence. Senior right fielder Drew Adams drew a walk to put two aboard before junior first baseman Tyson Ashcraft laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Adams and Massey up 90 feet.
An intentional walk of freshman third baseman Hunter Hanks loaded the bases for Shannon, who drew a five-pitch free pass to win the game.
The Huskies (4-4) opened the scoring with a run in the third and one in the fourth before the Bisons got on the board in the fifth. Junior second baseman Mike Korte got things started with a leadoff single before catcher Tyler Bethune moved Korte up with a sacrifice bunt. That set the table for Massey, who ripped his first double of the afternoon to make it a 2-1 contest.
UConn added a tally in the sixth to regain a two-run cushion but Lipscomb would battle back with a two-run eighth to knot the game 3-3. Junior centerfielder Jonathan Allison opened the frame by taking a curve ball off his helmet. After a close look by Lipscomb trainer Clint Woods, Allison scooted down to first and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
A single by Adams put runners on the corner before an errant pickoff attempt sailed into foul ground down the right field line allowing Allison to score from second and Adams to head into third. That set things up for Hanks, who ripped a single to left center in his second collegiate at bat.
“That was a huge at bat by Hanks getting down 0-2 with two outs and getting a base hit to tie it up,” said Forehand. “He hadn’t played a lot this year just waiting his turn and he finally gets his opportunity to be in there and gets a big two-out hit in a big game.”
The Bisons got a solid starting effort from redshirt-junior righty Will Blalock, who tossed the first four innings allowing two earned runs, four hits and a pair of walks. Nick Andros came on to relieve Blalock at the top of the fifth and went three innings allowing one earned run and two hits.
Redshirt senior Jacob Knott and then came on to work one and two-thirds innings allowing one walk and a hit by pitch before junior southpaw Jason Ziegler came on with two away in the ninth.
Ziegler got the job done for his second win on the season working a perfect one and one-third innings. Andrew Zapata took the loss for the Huskies allowing one earned run, three walks and a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The series between the Bisons and Huskies concludes on Sunday at Noon. The game was previously set for 1 p.m. but moved up due to the threat of inclement weather.
