NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team could not overcome leaving nine runners on base and committing a trio of errors in a 2-0 loss to Atlantic Sun Conference foe Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
The Norse (13-28, 6-12 A-Sun) opened the scoring in the contest with a run in the second as the Bisons (26-19, 14-7 A-Sun) committed back-to-back-to-back errors to start the inning and load the bases. That set things up for left fielder Ryan Lefevres, who looped a fly ball into left field allowing Cody Kuzniczci to score easily from third on a sacrifice fly.
Northern Kentucky then added the final run of the afternoon in the top of the third. Jordan Procyshen got the rally started for the Norse with a one-out double and Kuzniczci followed with a single through the left side to give NKU all the lead they would need.
A 1:11 lightning delay followed ending the day for Northern Kentucky starter Wendell Wright, who had been perfect through two innings. NKU’s Cody Cooper picked up where Wright left off however and carried a no hitter until the seventh inning.
Lipscomb redshirt-sophomore Adam Lee would break up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single to start the bottom of the seventh. Josh Lee would move to second later in the frame on a walk by junior centerfielder Jonathan Allison but NKU’s Jake Shaw got out of the jam.
Cooper picked up the win to improve to 3-7 on the season tossing four innings. The southpaw allowed just one hit and four walks, while fanning four Bisons. Shaw notched his fourth save of the season working the final three innings for the Norse.
The Bison staff was solid on the afternoon in the loss. Sophomore Denton Norman went five innings on the afternoon giving up one earned run, four hits and three walks. Norman took the loss to fall to 5-4 on the season.
Jacob Knott, Nick Andros and Jason Ziegler then followed Norman by combining to allow just one hit and a pair of walks over the final four innings of action.
The Bisons return to action on Friday after a break in the schedule for exams hosting Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m. at Dugan Field.
