JACKSONVILLE, Tenn. _ The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team will be out to prevent the sweep Sunday against North Florida after losing both ends of an Atlantic Sun doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Harmon Stadium.
The Bisons fell 7-1 in game one as they managed five hits against two North Florida pitchers. Je Papelbon, 5-4, threw eight innings and gave up all five hits and the one earned run while walking one and striking out eight. Je Papelbon closed out game one for North Florida.
The Bisons run came in the second inning when Zac Miller hit a solo home run to left field, his seventh of the season.
North Florida scored three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Robby Smithson started for the Bisons and picked up his first loss of the year to go with four wins. He gave up 10 hits in 5.1 innings and allowed six runs, all earned. He walked four and struck out two. Paul Piennette faced one batter in the six inning before giving way to Brandon McClurg who have up five hits and one earned run in 2.2 innings. He struck out two and walked two.
In game two the Bisons fell 13-6 in a slugfest that featured a combined 23 hits.
After spotting North Florida five runs in the first inning the Bisons responded with three runs in the second. Miller led off with a single followed by a walk to Caleb Joseph. After Ryan Price popped up to the third baseman, Eric Abend reached base on fielding error by the shortstop. Whit Reed, the hero of Wednesday's game with Vanderbilt, then singled through the left side to score both Miller and Joseph. Patrick O'Rourke walked and Nathan Sensing reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Abend.
The Bisons tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the fifth. O'Rourke started off with a single up the middle. After Sensing flied out to right field, Tadd Brewer doubled down the left field line. Ryan Mitchell, who has hit safely in his last 18 games, singled to score O'Rourke and Brewer.
The Bisons gave up eight runs in the sixth inning to give North Florida a 13-5 lead. In the ninth they tried to rally one last time, scoring one run. Reed singled through the left side. O'Rourke doubled down the left field line. Sensing walked to load the bases. Brewer flied out to right field for the sacrifice scoring Reed.
Matt Schnelly, 4-6, started for the Bisons. He gave up four hits and five runs, two earned. He walked three and struck out two. Charles Williams pitched 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and seven runs, four earned. He struck out two and walked two. Ryan Carroll closed out the game, giving up two hits and one run in 2.2 innings. He walked one and struck out one.
Reed and O'Rourke each had two hits. Abend slammed his first double of the season for the Bisons.
The Bisons, 21-29, 10-16, close out the their last Atlantic Sun road series of the regular season Sunday against North Florida, 34-20 overall, 20-9 in the conference.
