The Lipscomb Bisons second day in Florida wasn't as nice as their first.
And we aren't talking about the weather.
After opening the three-game Atlantic Sun series with Stetson with a 4-1 Friday night in a weather-delayed game, the Bisons hit the field at noon in DeLand, Fla. for game two, a 12-6 loss.
The game time was moved up from the original time of 2 p.m. to avoid expected bad weather.
Game three is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Melching Field.
Brandon McClurg, ins his first start since his second A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honor and National Pitcher of the Week selection, struggled. He pitched only three innings, giving up two runs in the second and five in the third on four hits. He walked two and struck out two.
The Bisons rallied for one run in the fifth. Designated hitter Justin Sanders led off the inning with a walk. He moved to second on a ground out by right fielder Shane Simpkins. Third baseman Brad Gooch singled to drive Sanders home.
In the sixth the Bisons added three more runs to cut the Stetson advantage to 5-4. Jorge Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Allen Bolden singled to right field. Caleb Joseph flied out to right field, but Gutierrez tagged up and moved to third. Sanders drove a double to left center that scored Gutierrez and Bolden.
Simpkins followed with a single up the middle to send Sanders home with a run.
Stetson came back with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and added five more in the seventh.
The Bisons did not go away quietly. They struck for two more runs in the eighth inning.
Left fielder Blake Bratcher singled to left as the first batter in the inning. Sanders followed with a single up the middle. Simpkins loaded the based with a bunt single.
With the bases loaded Stetson switched pitchers. The next two Bisons hitters made outs. Second baseman Ben Williams singled and then advanced to second on an error by the second baseman. Both Sanders and Bratcher scored, but Williams was credited with only on RBI.
Sanders, Simpkins and Gooch each had two hits as the Bisons finished with 12 against four Stetson pitchers.
The Bisons used four pitchers as well. Paul Piennette came in for McClurg and pitched the next three innings. He gave up two runs and allowed five hits. Charles Williams threw one-third of an inning. He gave up five hits and five runs. Mike Zenko closed out the game for the Bisons giving up only one hit and not allowing a run in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out two.
The Bisons are 16-13 overall, 11-6 in the A-Sun. Stetson is 14-16, 6-8 in the A-Sun.
