The Bisons needed more than nine innings to settle a bout with Austin Peay in the final home regular season game at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium. But in the end it was the Governors who came out on top with an 8-7 win in 10 innings.
With the win, Austin Peay came away with the season sweep against the Bisons. Lipscomb dropped a 4-3 decision to the Governors on March 23. The Bisons and Governors began playing in 1931, and Lipscomb leads the all-time series 62-58-1. However, Austin Peay has now won 11 of the last 14 meetings.
The Bisons jumped out to a 3-0 start on four scoreless innings from senior Matt Bowling. Back-to-back long balls from Bisons catcher Brett Teschner and right fielder Ricky Coleman highlighted the bottom of the fourth inning.
However, the Governors climbed back in with a double by the designated hitter Matt Kole that brought two runs in.
Lipscomb added another run in the fifth inning on an Andrew Nickerson RBI that brought in the Bisons designated hitter Zach Messer. Messer reached base on a triple to left field. Despite coming into the game with only two homers on the year, Teschner hit his second long ball of the night in the sixth inning to pad the Bisons lead and make it a 5-2 game.
The eighth inning belonged to the Governors who overtook the Bisons with five runs on four hits. With two outs and the bases loaded, Bisons left-handed pitcher Alex Ross gave up a double to Austin Peay’s center fielder Jared Delong. The hit brought in three more runs to add to the two runs already tallied by the Governors in the eighth.
Lipscomb entered the bottom of the eighth inning trailing 7-5, but the Bisons would not quit fighting. A two out double by Teschner set Coleman up to get his second RBI of the game. In the ninth inning the Governors pitcher Zach Gerler hit two Bisons batters and walked two, including the tying runner Messer.
Lipscomb’s right-handed pitcher Josh Cotham hit the Governors lead-off batter Michael Blanchard to start the 10th inning. After stealing second, Blanchard was driven in by Delong to give Austin Peay an 8-7 advantage.
The Bisons had an opportunity to tie or win the game in the bottom of the 10th inning after Coleman led things off with a single through the left side of the infield. Lipscomb senior center fielder Tyler Wilson then moved Coleman over to second with a sacrifice bunt. However, the next two Bison batters flew out to end the game, leaving Coleman on second.
Zach Gerler picked up the win and improved to 3-3 on the season, while Josh Cotham received the loss and fell to 1-4 on the year. The Bisons finished with 14 hits and one error, and the Governors had 12 hits and two errors.
Teschner and Coleman led Lipscomb at the plate and each had two RBI’s. Teschner went 3-for-4 with two homeruns and a double. Coleman went 4-for-4 from the plate and also scored two runs.
The Bisons fell to 18-34 on the season, and the Governors improved to 25-25. Lipscomb will head to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell in their final conference series this weekend.
