Monday, November 08, 2010Former Lipscomb Bisons pitching standout Rex Brothers was one of the participants Saturday in the Rising Stars Game as part of the Arizona Fall League.
Both Brothers and former Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph have been playing this fall for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Brothers was a first round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2009. Joseph was drafted in 2008 by the Baltimore Orioles.
The Arizona Fall League is considered by most to be one of the most important steps for a player wanting to be on a Major League team. The Rising Stars Game has become a showcase for the top minor league players.
There were 50 Rising Stars named last season. Twenty-eight of them played in the Major Leagues this summer according to MLB.com.
Brothers, a left-hander, is 1-0 this fall with a 4.50 earned run average. He has pitched in seven games for a total of eight innings in relief. He has given up 12 hits, four earned runs and two walks. He has struck out 13.
Joseph has played in eight games. He is batting .444 with 12 hits including one double and one home run.
