Lipscomb's Lady Bisons stand alone at the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference standings after beating Gardner-Webb 54-46 Thursday night at Allen Arena.
It was the fourth conference victory for the Lady Bisons in as many outings. Campbell had also been unbeaten heading into Thursday night's schedule, but fell 84-80 to Belmont .
The first points in the game were not scored until almost two minutes into the game when Lipscomb's Julie Martin hit a pair of free throws. Gardner-Webb's Katie Gravel scored the first field goal of the game at 17:28.
Courtney Boynton hit the first field goal for the Lady Bisons, a 3-pointer at 17:15 for a 5-2 lead. The Lady Bisons never trailed in the first half, and led by as many as 17 points on two different occasions. At intermission the Lady Bisons held a 35-21 advantage.
"A good team finds ways to win," said Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett.
Boynton was the only Lady Bisons player to finish in double figures. She scored 14 points.
The second half started out slowly for the Lady Bisons. They did not score their first points until the 14:40 mark when Katie Beth Pate scored on a lay-up. Gardner-Webb went on a 9-0 run to open the second half, trimming the lead to five before Pate's shot.
"We tried too hard," Bennett said. "Maybe we panicked a little bit."
Pate and Julie Martin each had seven rebounds to lead the Lady Bisons on the boards.
"Julie has played really well the last three or four games," Bennett said. "She is wearing a brace on her knee, but she has been playing very solid defense for us."
Turnovers were a major problem for the Lady Bisons who committed 28 for the game.
Gardner-Webb continued to chip away, tying the game at 41-41 with 10:45 left to play on a lay-up Brittany Harmon.
The Lady Bisons regained the lead again at 9:35 on a lay-up by Pate. They continued to rally and took an 11-point advantage at 53-41 with 5:24 left in the game.
"When they tied it up we could have folded and let them win the game," Bennett said. "But we made some stops and got points when we needed them to rebuild out lead."
Shameka Smith scored 14 points to lead Gardner-Webb.
The Lady Bisons are 7-3, 4-0 in the A-Sun. Gardner-Webb slipped to 4-6, 2-2 in the conference.
