After a missed three point shot by Michael Lusk and an offensive rebound by Jason Hopkins, Eddie Ard found the ball in his hands with one second left in regulation. The Bisons needed a three to stay alive, and the senior delivered as the final horn sounded to force overtime. The Bisons would capitalize on the extra five minute period to cap off an 86-79 win over the Fighting Camels from Campbell University.
Ard had a career high 35 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Lipscomb improves to 7-8 on the year and 1-0 in the conference. Campbell is now 4-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
"We needed every one of his (Ard) buckets that he got," said head coach Scott Sanderson. "He played awful good."
The Bisons took control of the game early on with a three pointer by Ard at the 19:43 mark of the first half. Lipscomb's biggest lead in the half was 32-22 with 3:30 left to play. However, the Fighting Camels would live up to their name and fight back with a 12-3 run to end the half. Lipscomb held on to a 35-34 lead going into the locker room for halftime.
The Bisons shot 39 percent from the field and 6-15 from downtown (40%). Lipscomb out-rebounded the Fighting Camels 23-17 in the first half. Ard led all scorers at half time with 17. Jonathan Rodriguez, the Atlantic Sun's leading scorer and rebounder, was held to 9 first half points and only 3 rebounds.
Campbell started the second half much like they finished the first half. They opened up with a 7-0 run to extend their 12-3 first half run out to a 19-3 run. The Fighting Camels took their first lead of the game at the 18:49 mark of the second half. Their biggest lead of the game was 64-51 which came at the 7:49 mark on a Jake Wohlfeil three pointer. Rodriguez led the Camels with 26 points and 7 rebounds.
The Bisons then went on a 21-8 run to end regulation and send the game to overtime. Lipscomb used their momentum to extend their run to 35-15 and secure a victory in Carter Gym at Campbell University 86-79.
"Any road win in the league is a good quality win," said Sanderson. "In the last eight minutes we were down ten or twelve points, and we dug our heels in. We got a couple of stops. It was 68-60 with like 4:47 left to go, and Josh makes two free throws and cuts it to six. We got a couple of big stops. That was a big win for us on the road."
Three Bisons scored in double figures to help secure Thursday night's victory. LaKory Daniels had 17 points and was 5-10 from the three point line. Brandon Brown scored 18 points as well as pulling down 8 rebounds. Ard had his first double-double of the season. He pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with his career high 35 points.
The Bisons came into this game second behind Campbell in both rebounding and rebounding margin. However, the Bisons out-rebounded the Fighting Camels 47-41. Hopkins led all rebounders with 12 rebounds.
The Bisons were 27-73 from the field (37%). They were also 12-32 from behind the three point line (38%). Lipscomb shot 20-26 from behind the charity stripe (77%).
Lipscomb's next action comes on Saturday night when they take on conference foe Gardner Webb at 7:15 CST. Coverage of the game can be heard on 900 AM beginning at 7:00 CST.
