COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was snowing outside the Eblen Center Monday night as the Lipscomb Bisons arrived for their game against Tennessee Tech.
Unfortunately the cold weather converted into a chilly start for the Bisons.
The Bisons found themselves chasing the Golden Eagles for the majority of the game eventually falling 78-71.
Tennessee Tech went on a 6-0 run to give themselves 16-6 lead just shy of six minutes into the game.
“With the way we started we got behind,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “They got easy baskets and they didn’t have to work for baskets in the first ten minutes of the game because they were getting them in transition and on stick backs."
The Golden Eagles and Bisons fought almost basket for basket until the Golden Eagles expanded their lead to 13 with 3:48 remaining in the first.
Sanderson then called a timeout that changed the flow of the game.
The Bisons responded on a 13-0 run out of the timeout to tie the game with 1:16 remaining in the first.
Sophomore forward Brandon Brown started the run with a layup. Senior guard Michael Lusk nailed Lipscomb’s first and only three-pointer of the night on the next possession.
Sophomore forward Michael Teller hit a jumper on a second chance opportunity to cut Tech’s lead to six. Teller also connected on a jumper on the next possession.
Josh Slater went to the free throw line and connected two free throws following a technical foul on Tech’s Daniel Northern.
Teller tied the game on the next possession with a jumper.
Tennessee Tech iced the Bisons run with a three-pointer by Kevin Murphy with 50 seconds remaining in the first half to give Tech a 32-29 lead going into the intermission.
Tennessee Tech maintained a slight advantage throughout the first ten minutes of the second half until sophomore center Adnan Hodzic connected on a reverse layup to give the Bisons their first advantage with 9:49 remaining.
“In the first part of the second half, we were scoring at will, but so were they,” said Sanderson. “When we got our offense clicking, then all of a sudden we have to clamp down on them, but we didn’t do that.”
Hodzic, who did not play in the first game this year against Tennessee Tech, scored a season-high 21 points.
Lipscomb expanded its lead to three points on two free throws by sophomore guard Jimmy Oden.
“When we get up, we have two bad turnovers back-to-back that went to easy buckets for them,” said Sanderson. “Those kinds of plays in these kinds of games are back breakers.”
Shooting the bonus at the free throw line from early in the second period, Tennessee Tech was able to pull away from the Bisons connecting on 15 free throws in the second period with 14 of those made in the final five minutes.
Oden finished the game with 15 while Brown added 14.
Lipscomb out-rebounded Tennessee Tech 41-39. The Bisons have grabbed more boards than their opponents in each game this season.
Hodzic and Brown brought down nine rebounds each. Senior forward Thomas Pfaff had six rebounds.
Lipscomb shot 42.6 percent from the field while Tennessee Tech connected on 47.5 percent of their shots.
Lipscomb was 1-of-13 from behind the three-point line for 7.7 percent.
“When we are 1-for-13 we have to have someone step up and make some shots,” said Sanderson.
Tennessee Tech was 5-of-15 from beyond the arc for 33.3 percent.
Slater, Brown, and Oden had three steals apiece.
Slater was credited with five assists.
Tennessee Tech blocked ten shots. Daniel Northern blocked a game-high six shots.
Lipscomb falls to 2-3 on the year while Tennessee Tech improves to 5-1.
The Bisons travel to Jacksonville, Fla., this weekend for a conference road trip. Lipscomb plays North Florida Thursday at 6:45 p.m. and Jacksonville Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
