Adnan Hodzic scored 24 points and Josh Slater added 19 but the Lipscomb Bisons were unable to pull out a victory over Tennessee Tech falling 92-89 Thursday evening in Allen Arena.
It was the third consecutive game that Lipscomb gave up over 90 points and allowed its opponent to shoot over 50 percent from the field. Tennessee Tech shot 53.0 percent (35-of-66) overall and 50.0 percent (10-of-20) from beyond the arc.
“We can talk and analysis it and turn it upside down, but the bottom line is that we are not good enough defensively,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson.
“We we score 89 tonight and 86 Saturday at home and get beat, then you are not good enough defensively. Right now we don’t have a sense of urgency to guard people.”
The Bisons had their best shooting performance of the season hitting 51.7 percent (31-of-60) of their shots. Lipscomb was 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from the 3-point line.
Lipscomb opened the game up early on a 11-2 run behind five points by Michael Teller and four free throws by Josh Slater to take a 21-12 lead at the 11:50 mark.
The Bisons were not able to hold on to the lead as Tennessee Tech went on a 20-7 run over the next 7:18. Lipscomb missed seven of its nine field goal attempts during the stretch and turned the ball over four times during the stretch.
Lipscomb turned the ball over nine times in the first half with Tennessee Tech scoring 16 points off of them.
Tennessee Tech advanced its first half lead to nine points with two free throws by Frank Davis with 54 seconds left in the half. Brandon Brown put pack a missed layup by Hodzic to make it a seven point game, 48-41, going into the break.
Tennessee Tech extended its lead to 11 points (56-45) with 17:08 left behind baskets by Alfred Jones and Kevin Murphy.
Lipscomb held Tennessee Tech scoreless for the next 4:48 as the Bisons cut the game back to 57-54 behind a 3-pointer and a layup by Teller.
Josh Slater connected on two free throws with 9:27 left to make it a 64-63 games. But Tennessee Tech’s Jud Dillard drained a 3-pointer to bring their lead back to four points.
A layup by Hodzic followed by two free throws on the next possession brought Lipscomb back to within one, 72-71.
A 3-pointer by Hank Davis and two free throws by Terrell Barnes put Tennessee Tech up seven, 76-83, with 3:21 remaining.
Michael Teller connected on a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining to make it an 86-82 game. Elijah Muhammad scored on a layup for Tennessee Tech on the next possession but Lipscomb’s Jacob Arnett countered with a layup on which he was fouled. He drained the free throw with 27 seconds left to bring Lipscomb within three points.
With Lipscomb down 90-86, Brian Wright drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 10.6 seconds left. The Bisons fouled Frank Davis who hit both free throws with 9.9 seconds left.
A 3-pointer attempt to tie the game by Teller rimmed out at the buzzer.
Freshman Zach Brown received his first career start for Lipscomb at the point guard spot. He scored two points and had three assists, a block, and a steal.
“I thought Zach did an excellent job of getting the ball into the low post,” said Sanderson. “I thought he did a very good job of getting guys shots. He played 30 minutes against a physical and quick team and only had one turnover. I thought he did a good job tonight.”
Teller scored 13 points for the Bisons while Brandon Brown had 10 points. Slater added six rebounds, five assists, and three steals to his stat line.
Lipscomb outrebounded Tennessee Tech 36-33. The Bisons were led by Brandon Brown with eight boards. Three Tennessee Tech players had six rebounds each.
The Bisons begin a four game road trip Tuesday night when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State. Game time is 6 p.m. (CT).
