Monday, November 15, 2010Lipscomb Bisons guard Robert Boyd is listed as a freshman on the roster, but he isn’t playing like one.
Monday night at Allen Arena he followed up an impressive debut at No. 8 North Carolina with a team-leading 20-point performance, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line, in a 103-78 win over Stillman College, an NCAA Division II school.
It was the home opener for the Bisons.
“Robert has had two very good games,” Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson said. “He has made a bunch of shots which is great, but the biggest thing he has done is he is playing with a lot of poise and understanding.
“He has played well on both ends of the floor. He gives us a lot of energy defensively. He is very, very active. He didn’t have a turnover against North Carolina and only had two against Stillman. That’s pretty good from the point guard spot.”
Boyd has also not been shy about challenging the opposition.
“He has played some big games in high school before,” Sanderson said. “He has a lot of confidence in his game. And his teammates have a lot of confidence in him.
“This is the way he has been playing in practice. He is playing awfully well.”
Sanderson got a long look at his team with 12 of 13 players on the roster playing 10 or more minutes.
Five players finished in double figures.
“My biggest thing was to get everybody some playing time,” Sanderson said. “I am trying to figure out who is going to play and figure out a substitution rotation. That’s why we played so many guys.
“It is probably going to be a battle every game. We will change our lineup pretty much every night until January until we settle in on who is going to be doing what. We have eight guys that are good enough and deserve to start. We are going to rotate players in and out based on what we need each game.”
Guard Josh Slater posted a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Slater hit four-of-five 3-point attempts.
“Josh got 18 points on nine shots,” Sanderson said. “He got 10 rebounds in 20 minutes. He was very efficient. We have to continue to get good play out of him.”
Center Adnan Hodzic added 19 points. Hodzic and Slater each played 20 minutes.
Forward Justin Glenn scored 11 points. Forward Brandon Brown added 10.
Stillman placed four players in double figures led by Lee Riley with a game-high 21 points.
“We have a lot of guys who can score,” Sanderson said. “We need some more players making stops on defense. I don’t care if we play 50 guys a game we have to do a better job defending.
“Brandon Brown needs to be a defender and rebounder for us. He doesn’t have to score for us to be effective. He can guard multiple positions. We desperately need for him to be a defender first.”
The Bisons are 1-1 overall. They are home Thursday to face Austin Peay at 7:15. The women will play Tennessee Tech at 5 as part of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader.
