Saturday, January 22, 2011Time has not been on the side of the Lipscomb Bisons this season.
After losing 68-67 at ETSU in Johnson City Friday night the Bisons are back on the court to tale on USC Upstate Sunday at 1 p.m. at the G.B Hodge Center in Spartanburg, S.C.
Both teams could use a win. The Bisons have lost five of their last six games on the road. Upstate has lost 10 straight games, including a 67-62 loss to Belmont Friday night.
The Bisons are 10-8, 5-4 in the conference. Upstate is 2-16, 1-7 in the Atlantic Sun.
“We went over to Upstate’s arena and had a walk-through Saturday,” Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson said. “We walked through some stuff that we want to do Sunday. We also shot some free throws.”
With the A-Sun portion of the season nearing the mid-way point Sanderson is mindful that some of his players are getting physically worn down.
“As a coach you have to manage your players,” Sanderson said. “You have to manage their legs. We didn’t want to do anything Saturday that was physically exhausting.
“It is not what we do in practice. It’s all about listening and learning.”
The Bisons are led by center Adnan Hodzic with 19.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Guard Josh Slater is averaging 17.4 points and 6.8 rebounds. Hodzic is first in the A-Sun in scoring and Slater is second.
Torrey Craig leads USC Upstate with 14.2 points and seven rebounds per game.
The Bisons have a 4-2 record overall against USC Upstate and a 2-1 record at the Hodge Center. Sanderson doesn’t want his players to be overlooking USC Upstate because of its record.
“Upstate is a very good team,” Sanderson said. “They have lost a bunch of games by six points or less. With 18 seconds left they were down by only three points to Belmont. They also beat ETSU.
“We have to be ready to go in every game. All we have talked about since losing to ETSU is Upstate.”
There is no rest for the weary for the Bisons. They will be back in action Tuesday at Allen Arena when Belmont visits for round two of the “Battle of the Boulevard “ for this season.
