MURRAY, Ky. – Ranked in the top ten in the nation for possessions per game, the Lipscomb basketball team generally uses its athleticism to speed up games to its advantage.
Thursday night at No. 24-ranked Murray State, the Bisons found themselves on the far end of the fast break spectrum in an 89-65 loss.
Murray State scored 26 points on the break to Lipscomb’s two. Contributing to the Racers’ tally were 23 Lipscomb turnovers which were converted into 37 points.
In the first half Murray State scored 45 points including 15 points off turnovers and 14 second chance points which equaled Lipscomb’s 29 first half points.
Junior Deonte Alexander was called for a technical foul with 4:43 left in the first half and Murray State started an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 17-point lead.
Sophomore Robert Boyd hit a pair of threes to start the second half bringing the Bisons to within 12. The Bisons turned the ball over on the next six possessions and Murray State stretched its lead to 30 points at the 13:41 mark.
Murray State led for all but the first two minutes of the game.
Freshman Malcolm Smith paced Lipscomb with 13 points and was seven-of-ten from the free throw line. Senior Justin Glenn had a game-high six rebounds.
Murray State shot 56.9 percent, including a 60.0 percent clip in the second half. Lipscomb shot 44.4 percent from the field.
Ed Daniel and Ivan Aska scored 16 points each to lead five Racers in double figures.
Murray State improved to 11-0 while the Bisons dropped to 6-6.
The Bisons continue their road trip Monday against Memphis at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on CSS. The Lipscomb Sports Network will carry the game live on 102.5 The Game presented by Jackson.
