Junior center Charlie Jenney tied his career-high with 15 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Lipscomb Bisons came up short 71-61 in an overtime game with Belmont in the first round of this season's Battle of the Boulevard at the Curb Center Friday night.
"We had defensive lapses on Belmont 's first four possessions of the overtime," said Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson. "You can't let that happen in a close game."
The game was one of runs with both teams scoring in stretches while the other side faltered at various times
In regulation the Bisons scored on a lay-up by Jenney with 21 seconds left to tie the game at 50-50.
The Bisons, sparked by 10 points from Jenney, held a 28-26 halftime lead. Jenney finished the game hitting seven-of-nine shots from the field.
Belmont went on a 10-3 3 run to open the second half. The Bisons kept the game close thanks to nine second half points from Brian Fisk.
" Belmont only made eight shots in the second half, but we only made eight shots in the second half," Sanderson said.
In the overtime the Bisons struck first on a 3-pointer by James Poindexter, but Belmont went on a 12-0 run to scoring run to ice the game.
Also scoring in double figures for the Bisons were Poindexter and Jason Guyette who each scored 11 points.
The Bisons held a 43-40 advantage on the boards with Guyette pulling down a game-high and personal season high nine boards and Shaun Durant adding seven.
The Bisons reserves scored 32 points while Belmont 's bench players scored 25. Joe Peters and Guyette came off the bench and played 24 minutes each. Jenney played 22 minutes. Brandon Hartwell played 18.
"Our bench did a great job," Sanderson said. "We have been saying that our bench players have to help us. That is going to pay dividends for us down the stretch in February."
Josh Goodwin scored a game-high 17 points for Belmont . Brian Collins added 16 and Nick Otis chipped in with 12.
