Brian Fisk is back in the scoring groove and that's good news for the Lipscomb Bisons.
Monday night at the Alario Center in New Orleans, La., the Bisons edged Nicholls State 73-71 thanks to the play of Fisk down the stretch.
"We were down by four points with 2 ½ minutes left to play," said Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson. "They came down court and took a shot and missed. Brian hits a shot to cut the lead to two points."
Nicholls State got a break when Lipscomb center Shaun Durant was called for an offensive foul on the play. But the Colonels turned the ball over. Fisk scored to tie the game at 71-71 and was fouled on the play. He missed the free throw. The ball went out of bounds off of a Nicholls player and the Bisons had another chance at 10.5 seconds left.
"We called two time outs," said Sanderson. "Brian was doing a good job shooting the ball so we wanted to get it to him."
Fisk took the ball into the middle of the lane and hit the game-winner with 2.4 seconds on the clock.
"We didn't play well, but we found a way to win at the end," said Sanderson.
The final score was about the only thing that pleased Sanderson.
The Bisons shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but there were a number of lead changes with neither team able to lead by more than five points. The Bisons held a 33-30 advantage at the half.
In the second half the Bisons appeared to have the game under control with a 10-2 run to take a 45-32 lead with 16:42 left.
The Colonels went on a run of their own and tied the game at 57-57 with 7:35 left. With 5:40 left the Colonels held a 65-60 lead.
"We stole the game," said Sanderson. "Nicholls State played a very good game. They were nine-of-21 in 3-point shots.
"They played five guards a lot. There wasn't really anybody for Shaun to guard."
The Bisons, 5-4, shot 42.2 percent from the field. Nicholls State, 2-7, shot 42.4 percent from the field.
The Bisons out rebounded the Colonels 39-35.
After taking a short Christmas break the Bisons are back in action on the road Dec. 29 at the University of Tennessee.
