Friday, October 17, 2008Classrooms and offices across Lipscomb’s campus may have been dark on Friday for fall break, but the lights were shining bright in Allen Arena.
The Bisons took the court late Friday afternoon for their first practice in preparation for the upcoming season.
Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson is primarily looking for effort from his players over the first few practices.
“With effort and energy, hopefully we’ll get a little better on execution,” said Sanderson. “We have several different styles our team can play. We can play big; we can play small. Right now we are in the feeling out process.”
Senior center Thomas Pfaff impressed Sanderson during preseason workouts for his effort.
“Thomas Pfaff’s energy level has always been great,” Sanderson said. “He has stood out the most in preseason conditioning and workouts for trying to do everything to the best of his ability.”
Senior guard Michael Lusk will be asked to take on a strong leadership role this year.
“We asked our players to do a team exercise the other day and when we asked who our team leader is, a lot of guys put down Mike Lusk,” said Sanderson. “This year he is a senior and he knows his leadership role needs to expand even more.”
Sanderson said the coaching staff and fellow players will also look to sophomore center Adnan Hodzic for leadership.
Sanderson will have fewer days than normal to get his team ready for their exhibition Nov. 4 at home against Freed-Hardeman.
“This year we started five days later than last year,” said Sanderson. “Last year we were allowed to practice Oct. 12 and this year we can’t start until Oct. 17. In my mind we have lost 12 to 15 hours in preparation for the season.”
Lipscomb will open its regular season Nov. 15 in Allen Arena against Oakland City University.
Fans will get an early chance to see their Bisons in action on Oct. 29 at HoopapaLUza, Lipscomb’s version of “Midnight Madness.” Action is set to begin at 9 p.m. for an evening of fun to send fans of all ages into a basketball frenzy.
