RALEIGH, N.C. – The scoreboard read 78-58 at the end of the game as the NC State Wolfpack defeated the Lipscomb University Bisons Saturday afternoon.
If not for a seven minute stretch late in the first half when the Wolfpack went on a 14-0 run, the Bisons might have had an opportunity for a marquee win.
“We can’t play that way offensively against a team like NC State,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “We made some shots and loosened things up a little bit, but it doesn’t matter who you are playing, you can’t go seven or eight minutes without scoring and have a chance to win.”
Many Lipscomb misses in the first half were on layups and second chance attempts. The Bisons missed 11 layups on the afternoon.
“We missed a lot of chippies around the goal that we normally make,” said Sanderson. “They were two or three inches taller, maybe weigh 30 pounds more, when you get bumped you get bumped a little harder therefore you don’t make those chippies around the basket and that makes a big difference.”
NC State held a 37-25 advantage at half.
Sophomore center Adnan Hodzic was quite in the first period with two points.
“In the first half we didn’t go to him as much as we needed to,” said Sanderson. “We need to go to him and play our offense through him.”
Hodzic dominated in the second period scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds.
“In the second half I said he needs to touch the ball and let’s play through him,” said Sanderson. “If he is only guarded by one guy, he is going to score some buckets down there.”
Hodzic finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bisons were never able to build a substantial run in the second half to narrow the lead.
Lipscomb went on a 6-0 run from 13:12 to 10:00 to narrow NC State’s lead to 14 but NC State responded with their own 6-0 run to extend their lead back to 20.
Sophomore Josh Slater came off the bench for the first time this season to finish with 13 points.
Redshirt freshman Brian Wright contributed significantly on the defensive end. He also finished the game with five points and four rebounds.
Senior Michael Lusk led the Bisons with four assists.
NC State held a 43-35 rebounding advantage.
Lipscomb shot 35.5 percent from the field. After only shooting 29.6 percent in the first half, the Bisons shot 40 percent in the second period.
Lipscomb’s three-point shooting woes continued shooting 2-of-14 for 14.3 percent.
“Our shooters are having to work so hard to get open that when they do get open, they are tired and can’t make shots,” said Sanderson. “This happened to a couple of our guys today.”
Lipscomb was whistled for 21 fouls while NC State was only called for 10.
The Bisons were 10-of-14 from the free throw line for 71.4 percent. NC State was 10-of-22 for 45.5 percent.
Lipscomb falls to 4-5. NC State improves to 7-1.
The Bisons are back in action Monday night at Elon in Elon, N.C. Game time is 6 p.m.
“We can’t let this game affect this game,” said Sanderson. “We talked about that yesterday to make sure we are taking it one game at a time. It is a Saturday-Monday trip like conference play and we have to get rested and healed up. Win, lose, or draw, we cannot let it affect us Monday.”
