Kimbrell starred as a center on the Lipscomb men's basketball team from 1982 through 1986 after arriving on the Lipscomb campus from the tiny town of West Point, Tenn. "John was a great competitor and an even better teammate," said Lipscomb Director of Athletics Philip Hutcheson. "He was a high energy person on and off the court, and with his friendly nature, he met very few strangers during his days here. John played a huge role in helping to propel Lipscomb onto the national scene, but even with all of his success, he was remained humble and approachable throughout his career.
"The news of his death makes for a sad day on Lipscomb's campus. But the memories that so many of us have of him, his love for his teammates and for Bison basketball will continue to bring a smile to our face in years to come. Our prayers and love are with his entire family as we share in this loss with them."
