Lipscomb men’s basketball coach Scott Sanderson announced the signing of Robert Boyd at Wednesday’s Fastbreak Club Luncheon.
Boyd is a 6’3 guard from two-time defending state champion Fulton High School in Knoxville, Tenn. While he runs the point at Fulton, Sanderson expects him to also play the wing.
“He thinks like a point guard, but he can also play the No. 2 position as well,” said Sanderson. “He’s going to play both positions and I like guys that can play multiple positions.”
Sanderson also speaks very highly of Boyd’s abilities on the defensive end.
“I think that his defensive ability is his best asset,” said Sanderson. “He can really guard the ball. That will help us out front.”
Boyd played a key role off the bench for Fulton in their run to the 2008 State Championship. He started for Fulton during their 2009 State Championship run.
“You don’t win two straight championships without doing things right,” said Sanderson. “He’s been very well coached. He understands how to win and what goes into winning.”
Boyd was named to the 2009 TSSAA All-Tournament team. He posted a 14 point, seven-rebound, seven-assist game against Memphis Sheffield in the first round of the tournament.
Boyd is coached by Jody Wright at Fulton. Teammate Jalen Steele signed last week to play at Auburn.
“Coach Wright does an excellent job of coaching his players,” said Sanderson. “He is very demanding on his players. It won’t be like when he comes in here things will be new to him. He’s already had to practice a certain way to be successful.”
Boyd was a 2009 All-KIL selection by the Knoxville News Sentinel and was named to the Knoxville News Sentinel’s 2009 First Team Preseason All-Knoxville team.
Boyd will be a freshman at Lipscomb in the fall of 2010. Lipscomb is graduating one scholarship player this year, Johnny Lee.
