NASHVILLE, Tenn. – When Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb met earlier in the season in men’s basketball action it was the Norse, who could not miss from deep as NKU hit 13 treys to down the Bisons 67-53 in January. But on Friday night, it was Lipscomb that came out hot and hit a season-high, 11 3-pointers including six by senior guard Deonte Alexander en route to a 76-58 win over the Norse in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Allen Arena.
“I’m very proud of our guys,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “We executed our game plan and that’s how we’ve been practicing the last couple of weeks.
“I thought our defensive effort was really good and I liked how we sustained our defensive energy.”
Lipscomb (9-14, 4-8 A-Sun) snapped Northern Kentucky’s (8-12, 6-6 A-Sun) six-game winning streak by holding the Norse to 38 percent from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arch.
The Bisons came out strong to open the game jumping out to a 12-3 run behind a pair of treys from Alexander. The veteran would go on to score a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor and 6-of-9 from deep.
Alexander was joined in double-figure scoring twin brothers Malcolm and Martin Smith, who each finished with 11 points. Redshirt freshman center Stephen Hurt just missed his eighth double-double of the season after a 9-point, 10-rebound effort.
Hurt played a key role in the Bisons posting 21 second-chance points as the big man hauled down four of Lipscomb’s 15 offensive rebounds. On the night, Lipscomb dominated Northern Kentucky on the boards 45-26.
Lipscomb continues home action on Thursday night hosting A-Sun foe Stetson at 6:30 p.m. in a contest that will air on ESPN3.
