NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It was a tale of two halves for the Lipscomb men’s basketball team in a 76-66 Atlantic Sun Conference loss to Stetson on Thursday night at Allen Arena in Nashville.
After outscoring the Hatters (11-14, 8-6 A-Sun) 34-26 in the first half, the Bisons (9-15, 4-9 A-Sun) were outscored 50-32 in the final 20 minutes including a 24-6 run by Stetson to start the second stanza.
“How we played the first five minutes of the second half is what did us in,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “They scored nine straight points on us to start the second half and punched us right in the mouth and we never fully responded from any standpoint of the game.”
Despite giving up the run to fall behind 52-40 with 8:31 to play, Lipscomb fought back to pull with five at 55-50 behind a pair of jumpers and an old-fashioned 3-point play from redshirt freshman center Stephen Hurt and a trey from freshman guard John Ross Glover.
The game remained within two possessions until the Hatters went on a 6-0 run in the final three minutes to put the game away.
Senior guard Deonte Alexander led the Bisons with 21 points on the night sparked by a 14-point effort in the first half. The veteran was joined in double figures by Hurt, who finished with 12 points. Sophomore forward Malcolm Smith finished with nine points in six minutes before leaving the game due to injury in what was a big blow to the LU game plan.
“Losing Malcolm had an impact,” said Sanderson. “He’s a guy that’s usually playing 26 or 27 minutes and when he goes out of the rotation, it hurts you a little bit.
Stetson’s Adam Pegg led all scorers with 23 points and added a game-high 12 rebounds for the Hatters. Chris Perez added 17 for Stetson along with 11 by Aaron Graham.
Lipscomb forced the Hatters into 18 turnovers compared to 14 for the Bisons but were unable to overcome a 42-32 deficit in rebounding. Free throw shooting also plagued LU as the Bisons were 8-of-18 from the charity stripe, while Stetson nailed 19-of-27.
The Bisons continue home action on Saturday night hosting A-Sun foe Florida Gulf Coast for “Star Wars” night at 6:30 p.m. at Allen Arena. The game is set to air on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
