Friday, March 06, 2009The USTFCCCA announced the top GPAs in the nation for 2008 Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division I Cross Country. Lipscomb continued a tradition of academic excellence with honors for both teams.
In the women’s rankings, Lipscomb tied for fourth highest team GPA with a 3.680 cumulative. In Division I 160 women’s teams received National Academic honors, which requires a minimum team GPA of 3.00 and participation in the NCAA Regional Championships. There are 394 Women’s Cross Country programs in the NCAA Division I.
“Our women’s team GPAs have always been excellent at Lipscomb,” said coach Bill Taylor. “I’m happy we are continuing this strong tradition of academic excellence. I honestly expect our team GPA to be even higher in the future.”
The University of South Carolina has the highest overall women’s team GPA in the nation with a 3.767 average. The University of Washington was honored with women’s cross country Scholar Team of the Year honors for their combination of GPA (3.28) and athletic performance (National Champions).
The Lipscomb Men’s Cross Country team also received National Academic honors, ranking 21st in the nation for NCAA Division I teams with a 3.340 cumulative GPA. 110 Division I men’s programs received National Academic honors, out of 315 Men’s Cross Country programs in NCAA Division I.
“I’m happy the men are achieving this honor too,” said Taylor. “In my collegiate coaching career of 13 years, every men’s and women’s cross country or track & field team I have coached has achieved a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher. There is a lot of pride in excelling academically and athletically and I expect that our men’s team GPA will rise even higher in the future.”
The top men’s GPA team in the nation was just a few miles across town from Lipscomb. Vanderbilt University has the highest Men’s team GPA in the nation with a 3.755 average. Iona College received men’s cross country Scholar Team of the Year honors for their combination of GPA (3.050) and athletic performance (2nd in the nation).
