Wednesday, January 06, 2010The Lipscomb Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams added to a long history of success in the classroom with 19 men and 13 women earning A-Sun All-Academic honors from the fall semester.
The fall 2009 semester was academically the best in Lipscomb Cross Country history since moving to NCAA Division I and joining the Atlantic Sun Conference.
For the men’s team 19 of the 22 men on the team earned A-Sun All-Academic honors, which requires a 3.0 or higher semester GPA. More impressively, 14 of the men earned a 3.5 or better and eight earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the fall semester.
The 19 A-Sun All-Academic team members set a program record, surpassing the 12 honors earned in 2008. The eight perfect 4.0 semester GPAs is also a program record. The number of 4.0 GPAs, the number of All-Academic honoree’s and the percentage of All-Academic honors (86 percent) for the men’s cross country team led all Fall sports at Lipscomb. All seven freshmen on the team earned the honor.
For the women’s team, 13 of 16 women earned A-Sun All-Academic honors. Seven of 16 women earned a 3.5 or higher semester GPA and three women earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 81 percent All-Academic rate was the second highest for all fall sports at Lipscomb.
Academic excellence is common for the Lipscomb Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field programs. All four programs regularly appear at or near the top of the academic rankings for NCAA Division I programs. In addition to large numbers of A-Sun All-Academic honors each semester, the Men’s Track & Field program tied with Yale for the highest team GPA in the nation in 2008, while the women’s team has finished 3nd and 2nd in the nation in Track.
Last Cross Country season the Lipscomb Women’s team finished fourth in the nation for team GPA while the men finished eighth in the nation.
Mike Knox became the first National Academic All-American in Lipscomb’s NCAA Division I Track & Field history last track season.
Ryan Chastain earned CoSIDA District IV All-Academic second team honors, the first for a men’s team member at Lipscomb.
Carolyn Latham earned the program’s first CoSIDA District IV All-Academic first team honors, the second year in a row she earned CoSIDA honors.
