GREENVILLE, N.C. - After improving its score in the second round on Monday, the Lipscomb men’s golf team could not find the cup in the final round of the Pirate Intercollegiate to post its highest round total of the tournament on Tuesday.

“The greens at Brook Valley were very challenging,” coach Will Brewer said. “I don’t think we processed how difficult they were, therefore we didn’t putt very well.

“There are plenty of things we have to get better at in order to compete week-in and week-out.”

In a nine-team field, the Bisons finished tied for fourth with a three round total of 906 (+54) at the Brook Valley Country Club.

Entering the final round Lipscomb freshman Sydney Chung paced the entire field after shooting 74-65 on day one. Tuesday was a different story as Chung shot a nine-over par 80 for a total of 219. Chung finished tied for sixth.

“Sydney was in the zone in the second round,” Brewer said. “He hit a couple shots really close then just got on one of those rolls where he made eight birdies. On that golf course, that is phenomenal. I am real proud of what he did.

“It was the first time he had led a tournament, and that can be overwhelming at times for a young player. He will bounce back and will continue to have a big year for us.”

Mikey Feher finished 28th with a three-day total of 230. After posting 76-74 in the first two rounds, Feher scored his highest round of the year on Tuesday with an 80.

Dustin Wilder and Dowling Armstrong finished the day tied for 35th after shooting 234. Wilder bettered his score with a 76 in the final round after carding a pair of 79s on Monday, while Armstrong shot 75-77-82 over the two days.

Paul Klein-Kracht fired the lowest round of the day for the Bisons on Tuesday with a three-over par 74. With each round, Klein-Kracht lowered his score after posting 86-76 in round one and round two. His 236 placed him in a tie for 39th.

All five Bisons finished inside the top 40.

Although the Bisons did not play very well on Tuesday, Brewer likes where his team is headed.

“I think we put some pressure on ourselves after the first day,” Brewer said. “We were in a great position to move up if we had played well, but we just didn’t make many putts today. It was just one of those days.

“Although we still have a long ways to go, we are growing and getting better each and every day.”

Presbyterian College led after day one and never looked back as it was crowned the tournament champion after shooting 885 (292-292-301).

Eric Brady of East Carolina University earned the medalist with a two-over par 215. Brady played consistently all three rounds with scores of 72-72-71.

Lipscomb will hit the links again on Nov. 4-5 in Jacksonville, Fla., at the Osprey Eagle Collegiate. It will be the final tournament of the fall for the Bisons golf team.

“Next week will really be a strong test for us,” Brewer said. “It will be a tough course just like the one we played today, but hopefully we will fare a little better.”
