MACON, Ga. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team has drawn USC Upstate in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships taking place Wednesday in Ft. Myers, Fla.

“We are excited to represent Lipscomb in our sixth consecutive A-Sun Tournament,” Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow said. “The players and coaches feel confident coming into the tournament.

“This team is a team in the truest sense of the word. We do not have a superstar or a go-to player, but we do have a group of players with tremendous heart, who know their role inside and out and are committed to fight for each other. “

Lipscomb (6-11-1, 3-4-1 ASUN) is the active leader in the A-Sun with six straight tournament appearances, starting in 2007 with a trip to the semifinal round.

The Bisons play the second game of two quarterfinal matches with Jacksonville facing ETSU at 3 p.m. and Lipscomb following at 6 p.m.

Florida Gulf Coast earned the right to host the championship after defeating Mercer 1-0 to claim the A-Sun Regular Season Championship with a 6-1-1 record. The lone loss on the Eagles schedule came in a 3-1 defeat by the Bisons at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

Mercer (9-5-2, 6-2-0 ASUN) is the No. 2 seed and will follow FGCU with a bye in the quarterfinal round. ETSU (9-6-3, 5-2-1 ASUN) earned the third seed while USC Upstate fought back in the final minutes of Saturday’s contest at ETSU to grab the fourth seed at 3-4-0 in league play.

Jacksonville won the final game of the season to sneak into the sixth spot with a 3-5-0 record in the loop.

The Bisons and Spartans battled on Oct. 21 in Nashville, with Upstate pulling out a 1-0 overtime victory. Lipscomb controlled the contest but was unable to place a shot into the net.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools in postseason play.

“I can’t wait to get to Florida to see what these men can do,” Morrow said.
