NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb tennis teams travel to Georgia this weekend to faceoff against Atlantic Sun foes Kennesaw State and Mercer.
Both teams are entering this weekend coming off losses to Belmont in the A-Sun opener last Saturday.
The teams head to Kennesaw first to take on the Owls on Friday. Last year, the women were swept 7-0 by the Owls, while the men picked up a 5-2 win.
Mercer will then host the Bison and Lady Bison on Saturday. The women come into this matchup having pulled out a key 4-3 win over the Bears last season. On the men’s side, the Bison also posted a 4-3 victory over Mercer.
For the Lady Bison, head coach Andrew Harris hopes last year’s win over Mercer will give them some confidence heading into this weekend.
“We are certainly looking forward to getting the taste out of our mouth from the Belmont match this past Saturday,” Harris said. “For the women, last year we had a good win at home over Mercer so we know they will be coming out firing. We need to be able to weather the storm and make sure we stay poised in our identity.”
Harris said the men need to focus on doubles play in order to have a successful run this weekend.
“Anytime you’re on the road the doubles point will be critical,” Harris said. “On the men's side, we must become better on the doubles side. Last year, we beat both Kennesaw and Mercer so we know when we return we need to be solid across the board. This will be another test this weekend for our guys in seeing how they respond from adversity. Similar as to before, the doubles point will be a critical factor. We will need to see how these combinations continue to evolve."
Kennesaw has faced Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson already in conference play this season. The Lady Owls recorded close losses for an 0-2 start (6-6 overall, while the men also lost to start 0-2 (7-7 overall).
Mercer has also played two A-Sun matches already against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson, with a Friday matchup against Belmont before facing the Bison on Saturday.
The Mercer women were swept 7-0 in both matches, giving them a 0-2 A-Sun record and 2-6 overall standing. The men also fell in both matches to head into this weekend’s match up 0-2 in conference play, but 3-7 overall.
Both Lipscomb teams enter this weekend 0-1 in conference play.
Match play will begin at Noon on Friday in Kennesaw, Ga.
