NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It is debut time for Mario Hernandez.
Hernandez, the former assistant coach and current head coach for Lipscomb men’s tennis is excited for the fall’s first tournament at Middle Tennessee on Friday, 20. The matches will be played at Middle in Murfreesboro with Lipscomb playing against the UAB at 9 a.m.
Freshmen Nacor Ibanez from Pruvia, Spain and Rob Mitchell from Southampton, England have blended well with the rest of the team.
Coach Hernandez says that the team has really been working hard this year. He added that makes it easier for him on the court in the terms of expectations.
The Bisons tennis team has players from Portugal, Spain, England, Ireland and the United States. It is a big learning experience and an opportunity for players on and off the court to learn because of such diversity.
Senior Miguel Cortez will pair with junior Stuart Tierney who played last spring at No. 1 in doubles play.
Junior Daniel Hernandez will team with senior David Salazar. Both are very coordinated when it comes to playing as a doubles team. They also hold an advantage as they share the same cultural backgrounds which is helpful in communication on the court.
The third pairing will be sophomore John Tougher and freshman Rob Mitchell.
There is not going to be any fixed singles line up for this tournament. Players are going to get opportunity to play on various positions.
“There is not much expectation from the players in terms of winning and losing,” coach Hernandez said. “As long as they are continuing to apply what we are focusing on in the practice sessions in order to completely prepare them for the season we will continue to get better.”
