NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Injuries proved to be as tough of a foe as Marquette for the Lipscomb Bisons tennis team in its season opener.

The Bisons lost 5-2 Saturday night to Marquette indoors at the Richland Tennis Center. Coach Mario Hernandez had only four players due to injuries.

"Knowing that we only had four players available made it tough on us," Hernandez said. "I felt that the team competed and embraced the challenge.

"No one feels sorry for us and we shouldn't have pity on ourselves. If anything I think this will make us stronger as a team because we have handled a challenge early in our season. All we can do is accept it and  get better because of it."

Stuart Tierney, playing in the No. 2 spot, won his match 4-6, 6-4 (10-3). Rob Mitchell won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

"Rob and Stuart came up with some good wins," Hernandez said.

He also had praise for David Salazar who lost 6-1, 6-5 at No. 1, and Nacor Ibanez who fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

"David and Nacor also competed well," Hernandez said. "David, as a captain, showed a lot of guts getting through his match even though his back was bothering him.

"I asked him if he wanted to pull out and he said he wanted to continue."

Hernandez is anxious to get his players back on the court Tuesday for practice.

"I want our guys to think about the road that lies ahead for us," Hernandez said. "We are going to have to adopt an iron will and  work ethic that we probably don't think we have in us.

"We will get better and we will be successful this year."
