NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team fell 4-1 in an Atlantic Sun Conference match to Stetson on Friday at Huston-Marsh- Griffith Tennis Center on the Lipscomb campus. The match was played in a clinch format.
“It was a tough match today but the guys played well,” Lipscomb coach Mario Hernandez said. “We were close in getting the doubles point, but came up just short.”
The Bisons dropped to 1-4 in conference play with the loss.
In doubles play, Lipscomb’s pair of Stuart Tierney & Miguel Cortez defeated SU’s pair of Laurynas Antropikas & Chester Espie , 8-6.
In singles, Daniel Hernandez at No. 3 recorded the Bisons only victory against SU’s Simon Julin. (6-4, 6-1)
David Salazar at No. 2 lost in straight sets to the Hatters Laurynas Antropika (7-6(5), 6-3.
“My ankle is almost 100 percent and I am moving better,” Salazar said. “It was a close match and overall the team fought well and left everything they had on the court. I am very proud of them.”
“The boys fought really hard today,” John Tougher said. “Unfortunately we came up just short, but we will reset and come back tomorrow for another important match.
“We hope to have a big crowd out for what is now our biggest match of the year.”
Miguel Cortez at No. 5 for the Bison was leading 6-2 in the match before Stetson clinched.
“It was a tough loss,” said Cortez. “We were really close in getting the doubles point.”
“We have another great opportunity tomorrow and we will go from there,” Hernandez said.
Lipscomb will be back in action against Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow at 2 p.m.
