Monday, March 15, 2010The Bisons continued their conference play Sunday as they fell to A-Sun conference enemy Jacksonville 5-2.
The Bisons began the morning with hard fought doubles matches. The men switched up their line-up in hopes of having better luck in doubles. Despite the close play, the men unfortunately lost the doubles point.
The Bisons secured a win at the No. 1 doubles spot. Daniel Hangstefer and Joe McArdle defeated Garcia and Fantova 9-8 (7) in a clutch tiebreaker victory.
At No. 2 James Murrell and Chad Pierron were upset in a close defeat, losing 8-6 to Esteban and Shahim.
Unfortunately the Bisons found a loss at No. 3. Shaw and Hernandez were defeated by Vaz and von Oerton 8-6, which gave the Dolphins the doubles point.
As singles play began, the Bisons fought to overcome Jacksonville’s advantage.
Pierron, making his debut appearance at No. 1 this season, was defeated by Vaz 6-1, 6-2.
In the No. 2 spot, Hangstefer fell to Fantova 6-2, 6-3, giving the Dolphins a 3-0 match lead.
Hernandez could not pull out a win at No. 3, losing to Garcia 6-4, 6-0.
The Dolphins had not clinched the match, but the Bisons continued to play hard, picking up two wins at the bottom of their lineup.
Murrell lost a close match at No. 4 after battling back in the second set. He was defeated by Esteban 6-3, 7-6 (1).
The Bisons picked up their first win at No. 5 when freshman Colby Shaw beat von Oerton 8-6 in a pro-set substituting for a full match. This was Shaw’s first win at the No. 5 position, but second consecutive conference win.
Another win was picked up by the Bisons at the No. 6 spot. Joe McArdle secured the easy win over Shahim 8-3.
Although it does not go down as a win, this was the men’s best results in a conference match this season.
"Tough match today,” coach Andrew Harris said. “We had opportunities in the doubles to take the momentum and were not able to close the matches out. We continue to get the production needed towards the bottom half of the line-up which is why it’s so pivotal we take these doubles points."
The Bisons travel to Georgia StateTuesday, March 16 at 1 p.m. before returning home to finish their spring break action.
