MACON, Ga. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team scored their first Atlantic Sun Conference win on Saturday when it posted a close 4-3 win over Mercer in Macon, Ga.
The win puts the Bison at 1-1 in conference play. Lipscomb head coach Andrew Harris said the doubles point was key in their win.
"What a tremendous match,” Harris said. “After finishing up the ladies match with that victory, to then follow up with this match was a great way to finish the day. What was great was starting out in the doubles and staying focused through the tough stretches to get the doubles point on the road. That is a very difficult thing to do especially against a good doubles team like Mercer. We will be looking for that same approach tomorrow.
“Heading into singles, we were immediately put in a tough position with Tanner Brown going out with an injury but the guys responded with great class. The players that won today stayed into their identity and were consistent in their approach every game. That is something that Coach Sherman has been going over with the guys repeatedly over the past few weeks, and it really showed through today.”
The Bison took all three doubles matches to win the point.
Junior Oliver Strecker and sophomore Miguel Cortez posted an 8-6 win over Victor Dias and David Barton at No. 1.
At No. 2, freshman Stuart Tierney and junior Tanner Brown defeated Pierre Tafelski and Peter Tauchner 8-5, while junior Colby Shaw and sophomore David Salazar took down Vincent DeLisa and Joao Pagan 8-3.
The sweep in doubles put the Bison up 1-0 heading into singles play.
The Bison quickly lost out on a win at No. 4 singles when Brown retired from his match with an injury.
Mercer picked up another win at No. 1 where Strecker fell to the Bears’ Tafelski 6-3, 6-2.
The Bison then posted a win at No. 2, where Salazar came back after losing the first set to record a three-set win over Tauchner, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 3, Tierney trailed Pagan 4-6, 7-6(7-5), 3-0 before defaulting.
Shaw secured an easy win at No. 5, defeating DeLise 6-2, 6-1, and Cortez took down Dias in three sets at No. 6 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 6-2.
