The men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the 2008 season with two days of competition at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track & Field Conference Championships in Clemson, S.C.
Both teams had solid performances.
The men were led by the 4x400m Relay team of Michael Knox, Clint Carter, Chad Roberts and Jacob Nelson, who finished 6th in a hard fought race with a time of 3:25.89, just 2.12 seconds out of second place.
"The men's relay fought every single step out there." said Taylor. "It was very fun to watch and I am extremely proud of their effort and fight. That's what we need in every competition and every event. If everyone in our program shows that level of fight and desire, we will see amazing things happen immediately.
"We lost two or three seconds when our third runner collided with another runner who had just handed off. Chad came to a complete stop before getting us back in the race. That's just one of those things that happens in a tightly contested relay.
"That time lost would have been huge in such a close race and the guys are certain they would have medaled, but the place doesn't matter when four guys go out there and give it their best for each other, for their school and for God. In the end, that's what this is all really about."
Other performances for the Bison men:
100m: Tylar Peoples 8th 11.20 pre, 11.35 fin,
Chad Roberts 9th 11.35
200m: Tylar Peoples 11th 23.44
400m: Michael Knox 8th 51.07 (all time personal best)
800m: Clint Carter 8th 1:56.14 (all time personal best),
Andrew Shankles 16th 1:59.12 (all time personal best)
Jacob Nelson 21st 2:06.72
Paul Wright 23rd 2:07.57
Jonathan Williams 24th 2:10.35
1500m: Andrew Shankles 10th 4:16.91 (.51 from his all time personal best)
Javelin: Austin Ray 8th 144 feet 3 inches
The men's and women's teams both finished eighth in the team competition.
"It's a bit frustrating to have so many 8th place finishes when just the top six score, but it shows we are a young program that is on the edge of something big,' Taylor said. "For the most part we performed as I expected we would. The effort was solid and I think we walked away happy but not satisfied.
" It's going to be fun to look back at this season in a few years and see how far we've come. Our goals now are to continue the rapid development of these athletes while we add more talent and depth in every event. This is just the beginning of something very special."
