Sunday, June 06, 2010Senior Ryan Chastain broke his eleventh Lipscomb University men’s track & field record Saturday night.
Competing in the Music City Distance Carnival at Vanderbilt on a hot and humid night, Chastain set a new school record in the men’s mile.
The full mile is a rarely contested event on the track these days. Chastain’s time of 4:08.89 broke Andy Russell’s 41-year-old previous school record of 4:10.54, set in 1969.
The race was Chastain’s last ever in a Lipscomb University uniform and caps a record breaking senior season that was arguably the best individual season in Lipscomb Track & Field history.
Chastain ends his career as one of the most honored runners in both track & field and cross country.
He capped his list of honors with the James R. Byers Award, the highest honor a Lipscomb athlete can received. The annual award recognizes a male and female athlete for “outstanding Christian leadership as well as excellence in both academics and athletics.
Chastain was also named by ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors as First Team All-Academic in District IV which includes Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Michigan and Ohio. He was a second team pick last season.
