Tuesday, December 07, 2010The Lipscomb University Men’s and Women’s Track & Field schedules for the 2011 Indoor and Outdoor seasons have been announced.
For the indoor season Lipscomb will participate in two local meets to start the year, both at TSU. Saturday, Jan. 8th will kick off the season with the Ed Temple Classic, followed by the TSU Invite on Jan. 29th.
The Bison’s and Lady Bison’s will then hit the road for the Niswonger Invite at Conference rival East Tennessee State University on Feb. 4-5.
On Feb. 11th the team will get a final indoor tune-up before the Atlantic Sun meet. The Indiana Hoosier Hills Invite will offer a great final chance to improve times and prepare for conference coach Bill Taylor said.
ETSU will host the 2011 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 18-19. Last season the Bisons and Lady Bisons earned 10 medals at the meet.
Ryan Chastain won the mile, finished third in the 5000m and anchored the Distance Medley Relay that included Isaiah Greer, Bobby Bassett and Andrew Jones to an A-Sun victory and a new conference record.
On the women’s side the DMR team of Priya Pappu, Sara Stephens, Emily Longden and Amanda Twigg finished third for All-A-Sun honors.
Lipscomb will have one weekend open before beginning the outdoor Track & Field season at conference rival North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The UNF Spring Break Invite will take place on March 4-5 on the same track that will host conference in April. The team will then travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a traditional stop on the Lipscomb schedule. The Southern Invite on March 12 will precede the Lipscomb Spring Break.
During the week of spring break the men and women will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invite, contested from March 17-19.
Upon return from spring break Lipscomb will prepare for a meet in Nashville. The Vanderbilt Black & Gold, on April 22-23, will be the first local outdoor meet of the season in Nashville.
On the same weekend Lipscomb will send some athletes to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invite.
On April 1-2 Lipscomb Track will make its first ever journey to Auburn University for the Tiger Track Classic. For much of the team this will be the final meet before the A-Sun Championships. Some of the team will get a final chance to qualify at the Boston Moon Invite, hosted by TSU in Nashville on April 9th.
The Atlantic Sun Conference Championship will take place on April 15-16 at North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The meet is a full month earlier than last year after a conference vote to move it up.
At last year’s A-Sun Championships Lipscomb earned five All-Conference medals. Ryan Chastain led the way with a victory in the 1500m. Burton Elrod finished third in the decathlon and Xavier Conley finished third in the long jump.
For the women, Brittany Duerk finished third in the javelin and Caitlin Anderson finished third in the 3000m Steeplechase. It was Caitlin’s second All-Conference finish in the 3000m steeplechase, after earning the same honor in 2008. It was also the second year in a row the Lipscomb women had an All-A-Sun finisher in the javelin, and the third year in a row for an All-Conference honor in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Following the A-Sun Conference meet those that are trying to qualify for the preliminary round of the NCAA Division I Championships will continue to train and compete.
The first of the post-season qualifying meets will be the Vanderbilt Invite on April 22-23 in Nashville. The local meet will provide a great post-conference opportunity to improve times and marks.
On April 30 part of the team will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to participate in the Stan Lyons Invite, hosted by Butler. Some athletes may also compete in either the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore., or the Payton Jordan Invite hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
The final two qualifying meet are the University of Tennessee on May 7th in Knoxville, followed by a return trip to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the North Florida Invite.
The NCAA Division I Preliminary Round will take place from May 27-29 in Bloomington, Ind. Top finishers will advance to the National Championship finals in Des Moines, Iowa which take place from June 9-12.
