NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb track and field returns to action this weekend with the Saluki Booster in Carbondale, Ill., beginning Friday at 4 p.m. The meet is hosted by Southern Illinois at the school’s Student Recreation Center.
Lipscomb put together a strong meet at last weekend’s Ed Temple Classic, breaking two school records along the way. Sophomore Tucker Peabody in the 55m dash (6.42s) and freshman April Terry in the shot put (11.41m; 37’ 5.25”) established new school records at TSU.
In addition to Lipscomb and the host Salukis, athletes from school’s such as Belmont, Southeast Missouri, Murray State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff will be in attendance.
“It’s nice to get our athletes in the technique events a lot of work,” said Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor. “The quicker we can correct their issues and the more time they can spend making them right, the better they will be at conference.”
The throws will feature tough competition this weekend. Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri bring in top throwers in both men’s and women’s action. The host Salukis feature three women’s athletes who rank in the top 15 nationally in the weight throw.
Lipscomb will take next weekend off, returning with a big final weekend in January. On Jan. 27-28, the Bison track and field teams will be at ETSU’s Niswonger Invitational in the first full meet featuring the distance runners during this track and field season. Select athletes will continue the weekend at the TSU Invite on Sunday, Jan. 29.
“Half our team still hasn’t competed,” Taylor said. “They may be behind, but it will pay off through the outdoor season.”l
