Sunday, March 06, 2011Jacksonville, Fla. – The Lipscomb Bisons and Lady Bisons posted another solid day of performances on the second day of the UNF Spring Invite.
Dani Walker was again the top finisher for Lipscomb on day two, finishing second out of 57 runners in the women’s 1500 meters, just missing the school record with a time of 4:39.77. She led four Lipscomb women in the top 10, with Amanda Twigg finishing fourth in 4:45.37, Tessa Hoefle finishing seventh in 4:47.00 and Jaimie McFarland finishing ninth in 4:48.07.
Seventeen LU women ran the 1500 meters in the meet, with 10 under 5:00 and in the top 20.
“We’ve come a long ways in a short time,” said head coach Bill Taylor. “Four years ago when I was hired, we didn’t have a single woman break five minutes in the open 1500m. My second year we had four for the season. My third year, last year, we had seven break 5 minutes, our first two under 4:50 and our first ever under 4:40. This year, in the first outdoor meet of the season, we have 10 women under 5:00, with one already under 4:40 and three more under 4:50.
“I hope by the end of the season we have one or more under 4:30, five or more under 4:40, ten or more under 4:50 and fifteen or more under 5:00. It is really fun seeing the dramatic improvement every year.”
Lipscomb also made a lot of noise in the field events and sprints on Saturday. Freshman Tucker Peabody ran an all time personal best of 10.76 to finish fourth in the men’s 100m finals.
Logan Ray finished 3rd in the triple jump with a leap of 45-5. Dillon Seigenthaller earned a third place finish in the men’s javelin with a toss of 161-feet 3-inches, followed by Steven Mason’s fourth place finish in the event. Adam Austin earned a 5th place finish in the men’s high jump, while Taylor Mason finished third in the women’s javelin.
Isaiah Greer was the top finisher for the LU men in the 1500m, posting a time of 4:03.39 for ninth place.
The women’s 4x400m relay team of Katie Bunker, Amanda Twigg, Sara Stephens and Dani Walker ended the day with a new school record of 3:56.83, good enough for fourth place overall.
“Day two was a solid conclusion of our first outdoor meet of the season,” Taylor said. “ We are happy and saw some great performances. We also saw how far we have to go yet, and with the conference championship scheduled a month earlier than last year, we don’t have a lot of time to figure things out. Each meet is much more important than in previous years.
“I am also very happy with the progression of our throws, jumps and sprints, especially on the men’s side. We had some great performances there and continue to improve each season. I like our progress and am excited to see that continue both this season and in future seasons.”
Lipscomb will compete next weekend, March 12th, at the Birmingham-Southern Invite, in Birmingham, Ala., before traveling to Myrtle Beach, S.C ., the following week during spring break.
