JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Saturday proved to be another day filled with all-conference performances for the Lipscomb track and field teams at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships. Seven school-records fell and a total of 14 all-conference medals were awarded at the two-day event.
The men scored a school-best 85 points to earn a fifth-place finish, tied for best in Lipscomb history. The women scored 40 points to finish sixth.
“We had a great meet overall,” said Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor. “We accomplished things we never accomplished before. The school records were great, as were the all-conference honors.”
As has often been the case, Tucker Peabody found the top of the podium again this week. The sophomore won the 200m dash with a 21.30s mark, two-hundredths of a second behind his own school record. . That time was nearly six-tenths of a second ahead of his next closest competitor.
He earned bronze in the 60m with a 6.90s run, less than two-tenths of a second behind the winning time. Both medals are the first in Lipscomb history for those events during indoor track and field season.
Sophomore Colin Dempster picked up a bronze medal in the 400m dash with a 49.04s mark and added a silver as part of the 4x400m relay team. He joined freshman Kenny Smith, sophomore Ryan Whitley and junior Bobby Bassett in a school record-breaking 3:19.28s run to finish second. Whitley would also add a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles with an 8.69s mark.
After earning silver in the pole vault during yesterday’s competition, freshman Matthew Deery returned to snag bronze in the heptathlon on Saturday. He moved from sixth at the end of yesterday’s competition into third by finishing second in the 1000m run, third in the 60m hurdles and third in the pole vault. His cumulative 4,889 points scored is a Lipscomb record and was one of three A-Sun scores that broke the conference championship mark on Saturday.
One day after just missing out on a medal with a fourth-place finish in the 3000m run, junior Isaiah Greer earned bronze in the 5000m run, finishing with a 15:04.19s time.
Freshman Kendra Lobley and sophomore Dani Walker (5:01.31s) finished second and third, respectively, in the mile run, with Lobley’s 4:57.31s mark giving her the Lipscomb indoor record. For Walker, it’s her second consecutive bronze medal in the indoor mile run.
Three other Lady Bison student-athletes broke Lipscomb records on Saturday. Senior Ashley Lehman’s 5000m mark of 17:35.75s bettered her previous indoor record by more than 15 seconds.
Freshman Brenna Thompson finished fifth in the 400m, besting the school record with a 57.45s run.
Sophomore Anna Belner put together a 3.05m pole vault effort, becoming the first Lady Bison pole vaulter to reach the 10 feet mark. She finished sixth.
"I was particularly impressed with the effort, attitude and maturity of many of our freshmen,” Taylor said.“Kendra and Kellie ran races like experienced veterans. Matt showed he is tough and on the way to a big track career here. Houston (Ward) led the way in the throws. Brenna and Colin were great in the 400m. We really feel positive about the future and see this freshman class as a group that will push and lead our whole team to greatness.
"At the same time, I felt that we could have been better as a team. We did leave some points out there and there were some performances that weren't up to our expectations. That's not so much a criticism as it is an expectation of greatness and a challenge to become a much better program in every way. We will rejoice in our successes, while we set the bar even higher."
The Bison and Lady Bison track and field teams will take a week off before embarking on outdoor season March 3 at the UNF Spring Break Invite in Jacksonville, Fla.
