NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In the final tune-up before the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships, Lipscomb track and field athletes closed in on peak performance at Tennessee State’s Boston Moon Classic, Saturday.
The women’s middle distance runners were sharp at TSU. Sophomore Katie Bunker won the 800m run with a personal-best 2:14.28s mark. Junior Amanda Twigg (2:17.93s, third) and senior Ashley Lehman (2:19.40s, fourth) also finished in the top-five. Lehman’s mark was a personal-best, while Bunker and Twigg earned season-highs.
Freshman Maggie Lawrence won the 1500m run with a 4:47.29s mark, more than a second better than her previous collegiate best.
“Maggie led from the start in the 1500 and ran a season-best,” said Lipscomb head coach Bill Taylor. “All three of our 800m runners ran a season- or personal-best and did very well for us.”
In the pole vault, sophomore Anna Belner broke the women’s school record with a 3.23m (10’ 7”) height to win the event. Freshman Kevin Floyd won the men’s event with a 4.26m (13’ 11.75”) mark.
“Anna vaulted well,” Taylor said. “She proved to us she can go even higher.”
Freshman thrower April Terry was runner-up in the weight throw (school-record 44.25m; 145’ 2”) and the shot put (12.13m; 39’ 9.75”), while freshman Kaitlin Collier earned an eighth-place finish in the shot put with a 10.66m (34’ 11.75”) and runner-up in the javelin (31.62m; 103’ 9”).
In men’s throwing action, freshman Houston Ward won the shot put (13.80m; 45’ 3.50”) and finished third in the hammer throw (40.17m; 131’ 9”).
Senior Austin Ray was runner-up in the javelin with a 49.86m (163’ 7”) toss.
In men’s hurdle action, freshman Andrew Wolf set a personal-best with a 15.62s mark to finish eighth.
“We had a very good day, especially with very few athletes competing,” Taylor said. “The women’s team did especially well, with two school records and three event victories.
“The meet served its purpose in prepping some of our athletes for the A-Sun Championships, improving qualifying marks for many and generating excitement going into next weekend.”
