NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With a split squad heading two different directions, the Lipscomb track and field team will participate in the Hoosiers Hills Invite in Bloomington, Ind., and at the Samford Invite in Birmingham, Ala.
“They are both very good meets and both on a 200m banked track,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “They are very similar to one another. There isn’t an advantage in going to either place with the exception of doubling our entries.”
The Hoosiers Hills will see the top distance runners from Lipscomb along with the 400m runners, men’s high jump and men’s pole vault.
The Samford Invite will see the sprinters, women’s high jump, women’s pole vault, thrower’s and the remaining distance runners.
“Our distance runners always seem to run well at the Indiana meet and we’ll send the rest to Samford who are looking for qualifying marks,” Taylor said.
Coming off the TSU Invite, Lipscomb had nine event wins including Dani Walker who came away with a pair of victories in the mile run and as a member of the distance medley relay team.
“She is at another level,” Taylor said. “This is the highest level we have seen for distance women. She has always had this ability. She is just starting to be confident. We’re not there yet though. She still has room to grow.
“She is in the invitation sectional of the mile at Indiana, which we had targeted as an opportunity to get a top-time.”
Lipscomb also saw a 36-year old record be tied at the TSU Invite when Gemikal Prude had a leap of 2.08 meters in the high jump. Prude’s jump earned him Atlantic Sun Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors.
“Gemikal will be at the Indiana meet where he will hopefully have an opportunity to break the record.” Taylor said.
Lipscomb will also see a new face in John Kingstead. The Stockholm, Sweden native will be running his first race for the Purple and Gold in the 3,000m.
“John should be able to help push Tim Muller and Daniel Gardner to even faster times as both of them have had a great start to the year,” Taylor said.
