MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lipscomb track and field groups opened up the outdoor season at the Rhodes Open in Memphis this weekend.
"It was a good solid first outdoor meet for us,” said Bill Taylor, director of track and field. “I'm happy with the effort. Everyone competed hard.”
April Terry had a memorable performance as she broke the school record in the hammer throw and took home second place with a throw of 49.43 meters.
"April broke another school record,” Taylor said. “It's awesome that she continually pushes herself to be better.”
Freshman Alex Csorba also made a great first impression as he competed in the javelin throw posting a measure of 52.14 meters.
"Alex was a surprise,” Taylor said. “I don't know if he has ever thrown the javelin before. That's a really nice throw to start the season.”
It was also a positive day for both the men’s and women’s pole vaulters. Annika Backlund landed a new school record and a personal best of 3.66 meters while Kevin Floyd took posted a 4.57. Both took home first in the event.
The distance runners also had a very productive day in Memphis.
"Sally (Larson) broke 17 minutes, which is one of those barriers we look to take down for all our distance girls,” said Taylor. “She should also get into the Stanford Invite with that time (in three weeks), which is what we were after.”
Larson brought home a second-place finish in the 5000 meters with a finishing time of 16:53.95.
"Christian Freeman, Jared Wingerter, and Daniel Gardner broke 15 minutes,” Taylor said. “I don't think we've ever had three guys do that to open an outdoor season.”
The three runners took the second, third, and fourth-place finishes in the men’s 5000-meter with 14:48.98, 14:53.48, and 15:56.42 respectively.
Lipscomb also saw several second-place finishes while competing at the Rhodes Open.
Kayla Droessler took second in the mile finishing in 5:05.19. Tucker Peabody landed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.25. Andrew Bosket took second in the 800 meter run crossing the line in 1:56.22.
The 4x800 medley relay saw a win from Lipscomb runners. Larson, Madi Talbert, Droessler, and Dani Walker took home the best time in the event posting a time of 9:32.86.
"We've been training hard and that was obvious for the men and the women in the 5000-meter,” Taylor said. “The effort was great, but nobody looked crisp. Nobody looked smooth. They fought for what they got. That's exciting because it shows we can run fast when tired. And a big drop in time will come soon.”
The group’s next meet takes place in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as they heat up the competition at the Shamrock Invite March 20-22.
