The coaches were ready, the players were ready, the fans were ready, and most importantly LU's Bison was ready.
All the important ingredients were on hand for the 2nd Annual HoopapaLUza at Allen Arena on Monday night - Lipscomb's version of "Midnight Madness" to signal the NCAA's official start of basketball season.
The night kicked off with a motivational video highlighting the tradition of Lipscomb basketball, followed by a live performance from "The Bison Bombshells." Led by Luke Flener, this great dance number warmed up the crowd, although nobody rushed to call them "graceful" or "talented."
The evening was filled with high energy and loads of fun. After introductions of the teams and cheerleaders, a few Bisons and Lady Bisons took the court for a Hot Shot contest.
Seniors Trey Williams and Penny Jones dominated the game designed to spotlight shooting prowess. Although their victory was tainted with the hint of a timing snafu, good sportsmanship and good clean fun reigned.
Fans also enjoyed watching several Bisons soar in the Slam Dunk Competition. Freshman Brandon Moore captured the highest scores while Eddie Ard, Israel Kirk, and LaKory Daniels provided their share of "high"lights.
Those in attendance were also taught "Bison Fan Etiquette" by Flener, including proper technique when Lipscomb and opponents shoot free throws as well as what to do prior to the opening tip.
The evening included much more than simply watching basketball. A couple of lucky fans took home cash prizes for their involvement - sophomore Andrew James, who drained a half court shot in "Two Minutes for $200," and Chris Burnette, who won the SGA $300 cash drawing just for being in attendance.
The evening was capped with Purity Ice Cream for everyone.
The Bisons open the season with an exhibition against Freed-Hardeman on Monday, Nov. 6 in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons begin play just three nights later as part of an exhibition doubleheader against Harding University on November 9.
